Most rainwater harvesting that disappoints was sized before anyone calculated what the site could actually collect. The starting point is catchment area, local rainfall pattern and a runoff coefficient that reflects the real surface - roof sheeting, concrete apron and open yard behave nothing alike.

Only once the yield is known does it make sense to ask what to do with it.

Storage, recharge, or both

  • Storage where demand runs through the year and the water can displace bought supply - which is what makes the payback real.
  • Recharge where demand is seasonal, or where the aquifer under the site is the constraint that matters.
  • Filtration sized for the first flush and the silt load, because this is the component whose failure quietly disables everything downstream.
  • Overflow routed deliberately, not left to find its own way across the yard.

Recharge structures fail for one reason more than any other - silt, entering a pit whose filter chamber was never cleaned. We design for the maintenance that will realistically happen, specify the cleaning interval, and say plainly what stops working if it is skipped.

The evidence side

Harvesting and recharge appear in building approvals, in green building certification, and in groundwater NOC applications, where conservation measures are examined rather than accepted on assertion. Sizing that ties back to a water balance is what makes the claim hold up.

Is rainwater harvesting mandatory for us?

It depends on where you are and what you are. Several states and municipal bodies require it above a plot or built-up area threshold, it is frequently written into building approvals, and it is commonly a condition attached to groundwater NOC. The answer comes from your own approvals rather than a national rule.

Should we store the water or recharge it?

It depends on rainfall pattern, how much water you actually use, and what the ground beneath you will accept. Storage suits sites with steady year-round demand; recharge suits sites where demand is seasonal or where the aquifer is the thing under pressure. Many sites end up doing some of both.

How is the yield calculated?

Catchment area multiplied by rainfall and a runoff coefficient that depends on the surface - a metal roof behaves very differently from a paved yard. Getting the coefficient wrong is the usual reason a system underdelivers against what was promised.

Why do recharge structures stop working?

Silt. A recharge pit without a functioning filter chamber clogs within a season or two, and the site concludes that recharge does not work when what failed was the maintenance regime.

Does this help with our groundwater NOC?

Usually yes. Conservation and recharge measures are part of what the Authority looks at, and a designed system with evidence behind it is stronger in an application than a stated intention.
