Environmental monitoring usually points outward - stack, ambient air, effluent. Work environment monitoring points inward, at the conditions inside the shed where people spend their shift, and it is a statutory expectation under factory legislation rather than a voluntary exercise.

What gets measured

• Illumination - lux levels at the task, not at the centre of the room, mapped across workstations, inspection points and walkways.
• Noise - area levels and, where exposure is significant, personal dosimetry over the shift rather than a spot reading.
• Heat stress - Wet Bulb Globe Temperature near furnaces, boilers, dryers and enclosed areas, which is what work-rest cycles are set from.
• Airborne exposure - dust, fumes, mists and solvent vapour where the process generates them.
• Ventilation adequacy where local exhaust is the control being relied on.

A reading is not a finding

The common failing in these surveys is a report full of numbers and empty of conclusions. A lux value means nothing on its own; it means something against the level that task requires. We report measured against applicable, mark the positions on a layout, and state what each exceedance implies - so the result can be assigned to somebody rather than filed.

Sampling and analysis run through our own accredited laboratory, with instrument calibration status stated in the report. Where exposure findings raise health questions, they feed into health risk assessment, and where they point to a task-level hazard, into HIRA.

Who asks for it

Factory inspectors during statutory inspection, customers running supplier audits, certification bodies assessing occupational health and safety management systems, and increasingly the site's own management after a complaint or an incident.

What does work environment monitoring cover?

Is it a statutory requirement?

Periodic monitoring of the working environment is required under factory legislation, and the frequency and parameters are set by the rules applying in your state and by the hazards present. Records are asked for during inspection.

Why is illumination measured in so many positions?

Because the requirement is about the task, not the room. A reading taken in the middle of the floor says nothing about the light falling on a workbench or an inspection station, so measurement follows the tasks rather than the layout.

What is WBGT and when does heat stress monitoring apply?

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature combines temperature, humidity and radiant heat into a single index. It applies wherever work is done near furnaces, boilers, dryers or in enclosed spaces during summer, and it is the measure used to decide work and rest cycles.

Do you supply the report the inspector asks for?

Yes - results against the applicable limits, positions marked on a layout, the instruments and their calibration status, and findings written so that a corrective action can be assigned rather than filed.
