What FERA covers

Fire and Explosion Risk Analysis takes the fire and explosion scenarios credible at your facility and quantifies them - how much thermal radiation reaches a given point, what overpressure a structure would see, and whether either is enough to cause escalation.

What the study produces

  • Radiation contours at the thresholds that matter - for equipment damage, for escalation, and for the levels at which people cannot remain or escape
  • Overpressure contours and their consequences for buildings, control rooms and occupied structures
  • Escalation assessment - whether one event can reach the next inventory and start a chain
  • Impact on safety-critical systems - can the ESD, firewater or detection survive long enough to work?

Flare radiation studies

A flare radiation study is a specific case we handle within the same framework: radiation at grade and at working platforms during normal flaring and during an emergency relief case, checked against the levels at which personnel can work, escape, or must not be present at all.

Where FERA fits

FERA sits between consequence analysis, which models the physical effects, and QRA, which combines those effects with likelihood. Many sites need FERA specifically because a layout, a new unit or an occupied building decision hangs on it.

Typical triggers

  • Siting or extending an occupied building near process areas
  • Adding inventory or changing to a more hazardous service
  • Regulator or insurer asking for quantified fire and explosion risk
  • Escalation concerns raised during HAZOP
  • MAH documentation
