What a HAZID study is

A HAZID (Hazard Identification) study is a structured team review that identifies hazards early, while the design is still cheap to change. It casts a deliberately wide net - process hazards, but also external and natural hazards, layout, logistics, construction, commissioning and decommissioning.

It is the study that asks "what could hurt this project?" before anyone has committed to a P&ID.

When a HAZID is done

  • Concept and feasibility, when site and technology options are still open
  • FEED, to inform layout and separation distances
  • Before a major modification or a change of service
  • For greenfield sites where external hazards - flooding, seismic, neighbouring units - matter as much as process ones

HAZID compared with HAZOP

HAZIDHAZOP
StageConcept and FEEDOnce P&IDs are firm
ScopeBroad - process, external, natural, operational Narrow and deep - process deviations only
BasisLayout, block diagrams, site dataP&IDs, node by node
QuestionWhat hazards exist at all? What can deviate from design intent?
OutputHazard register with actionsDeviation worksheets with recommendations

They are sequential, not alternatives. HAZID shapes the design; HAZOP interrogates it once it exists.

What we deliver

  • Independent facilitation with a dedicated scribe
  • A hazard register with causes, consequences, existing controls and ranked actions
  • Risk ranking against your own criteria, or ours if you do not have a matrix yet
  • Clear handover into the studies that follow - HAZOP, consequence analysis and QRA
