What a PHA is
Process hazard analysis is the umbrella term for the structured review of hazards in a process, their causes, consequences and the protection layers in place. It is not a single technique - it is the family that HAZOP, HAZID, what-if analysis, checklist review and FMEA all belong to.
"We need a PHA" usually means "we need the right one of those, chosen for where this process actually is."

PHA revalidation
A PHA is a snapshot of the plant on the day it was done. Plants change - throughput creeps up, a catalyst changes, a bypass installed for a shutdown becomes permanent. Good practice is revalidation every five years or after any significant modification, and revalidation is usually far quicker than a fresh study because the node structure already exists.

Frequently asked questions
Is PHA the same as HAZOP?
No. HAZOP is one PHA technique - the most rigorous for a continuous process with firm P&IDs. PHA is the family of techniques; picking the wrong one wastes the workshop.
How long does a PHA take?
A typical unit runs three to five days of workshop, plus preparation and reporting. Node count and drawing quality drive it more than plant size does.
Who needs to attend?
Operations, process engineering, instrumentation and maintenance at minimum. The single biggest predictor of a weak study is an operations team that did not attend.
Is a PHA legally required in India?
For MAH installations the MSIHC Rules require hazard identification and risk assessment, which a PHA satisfies - see MAH analysis. For other sites it is good practice and increasingly an insurer's condition.
